The Quai Branly Museum is a colossal edifice on stilts that surprises with its deep colours and sharp forms. Reached via a long circular ramp, the permanent collection is divided into four continents (Africa, Asia, Americas and Oceania), separated by a large winding serpent or river.
The Asian department covers China, India, Japan, Central Asia, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Largely concentrated on the indigenous tribes of the regions, the Asian collection is particularly rich in costumes and textiles.
The African collection is the museum largest component, largely due to France's colonial presence in Africa. More than 1000 works will be displayed at any given time, including sculpture, furniture, fabrics, ceramics, jewelry and ritual objects.
The Oceania collection, includes Polynasia, Melanesia, Australia and the islands of Southeast Asia, grouped together.
No Paris museum would be complete without restaurants, the classic, elegant: Les Ombres (the Shadows), situated on the rooftop of the museum building, and the casual Café Branly on the ground floor.
As if that werent enough, the museum will also include a huge public garden, complete with an open-air amphitheatre.
